Description

Through the windscreen was a pivotal piece for me, at one and a half meters by one meter in size it is the largest charcoal drawing I have done to date. It’s from an emotional day when I visited our eldest son in Hospital where he had been sectioned again. We were aloud to go out for an hour or two and on this day we were going out for lunch at a pub we like called The Bristol Flyer on Gloucester road in Bristol, U.K. We were sat in my van drinking coffee as a rain storm came over. One of those ones that had a name. It was very heavy and we didn’t have the windscreen wipers on. We took loads of pictures on my phone, discussing and arguing about the framing and timing of each shot, having more fun and conversation than I had had with him in a long time due to his mental illness. We zoomed in on the pictures, discussing how they would make amazing charcoal drawings. It felt like we were engaging with the different views we have on the world, his distorted with illness or mine distorted by my dyslexia and other difficulties as well as my tears (Mental Illness is a difficult thing to contend with). A wonderful moment that I will never forget and captured in this drawing. It was a challenge a took a long time to do, taking up a large space in our dining room. I had to stand way back often to see thing emerge. I don’t expect it will show up very well on these pages, but I was very pleased with the results and enjoyed every moment of doing it.

Willow and compressed charcoal on a primmer and undercoated plywood board, image size 154cm x 87.5cm and framed size 168cm x 101.5cm.
