Life on a Grave 2023
“Life on a Grave” a charcoal drawing created in 2023. This artwork was inspired by a visit to the historic St Petrock’s Church in Parracombe, Devon. Known as an 18th-century time capsule, the church and its surroundings provided a rich source of inspiration.
During our visit, I observed the unique sight of moss thriving on a gravestone in the churchyard. This moss, which had captured the moisture from the air to nourish itself, was a striking example of how life can persist even in the most unlikely of places. Fascinated by this natural phenomenon, and the fact that the moss doesn’t need roots and soil to thrive, I took several reference pictures and ended up doing this drawing in willow charcoal.
It was a challenge in many ways, that I really enjoyed. The focal point, as the camera captured it as well as the reflections in the drops and of course the scale to the overall image. The soft greys of the charcoal, when viewed up close, appear flat and muted, yet they shift and change as the viewer steps back, creating a dynamic visual journey. This interplay of focus and depth pulls the observer around the scene, inviting them to explore the intricate details and the overarching beauty of life persisting against the odds.
This is an Original framed piece using Willow charcoal on Cartridge paper, the image size is 64cm x 42cm and the framed image full size measures 83cm x 66cm
