Angel of the font 2023
A high quality giclée Limited Edition of the original willow charcoal drawing by Bob Iles
“Angel of the Font” is a pivotal piece created in 2023. This stunning work of art is a charcoal drawing on white paper, showcasing the immense versatility and depth that can be achieved with this medium. I loved doing this piece and was really pleased with the results
My inspiration for “Angel of the Font” came from the life-sized baptismal angel statue at the Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune Protestant Church (Église Protestante Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune) in Strasbourg, France. Captivated by the neo-Gothic sacred architecture and the detailed craftsmanship of the statue, I was particularly intrigued by the tool and brush marks of the original makers, which I believed dated back to the end of the 19th century.
The “Angel of the Font” involved careful observation and meticulous attention to detail. I utilized charcoal as my sole medium, which allowed me to effectively render the intricate textures and nuances of the statue. I could see that the statue seemed to be made by carving wood and then adding plaster to the skin surfaces before painting. This texture and the makers’ tool marks are captured in the piece, bringing the statue to a textured life on paper.
